Rusa timorensis


Rusa timorensis
Rusa timorensis or Javanese rusa or Timor deer, today they are largely confined to sanctuaries in Java, such as Baluran and Udjung Kulaon.

The archeological record of south Sulawesi shows that deer Rusa timorensis first appeared there about 4000 years ago.

There are eight subspecies of this deer, which are widely distributed over the eastern part of the Indonesian Archipelago.

Two subspecies are also found in Australia but they are smaller in size.

The species also called Sunda sambar and it occupies a variety of habitats, including forest, plantations, an open grassland. It mainly nocturnal but sometimes grazes by day. The diet includes grass, shrubs and herbs.
