Green Peafowl


There are three species of peafowl, the blue or Indian peafowl, the green peafowl which lives farther east and the Congo peafowl.

The green peafowl natural habitat is from Myanmar to Java Its scientific name: Pavo muticus.

The Indo China green peafowl was named Pavo muticus imperator in 1949, by a Frenchmen Jean Delacour (1890-1985), when led seven expedition to Indo China.

A large, handsome bird, the green peafowl overall as its name implies. It grows a pointed crest of shiny blue-green feathers that accents the bare cheek and a bare, blue, ring about the eye.

The neck and upper breast are bronzed green that shines violet in certain lights.

The wings are green turquoise and black, the entire plumage has a metallic appearance.

The wild , flighty, and delicate temperament of the Green is tempered by crossing with the India Blue, while preserving the astonishingly beautiful colors.

The species are native to the forests of south-east Asia, has undergone a rapid population decline, primarily owing to high hunting levels, although, more locally and also due to habitat loss.

Green peafowl, were found only in forest, predominant deciduous. Abundance in the next most suitable habitat (mixed forest) was half that in deciduous forest, and land within hunting distance of human settlements had average peafowl abundance less than half in les accessible regions.

People often incorrectly call peafowl peacocks. Peacocks are actually male peafowl: the female are called peahens.
