The wild cat is a species complex of small cats made up of both the European wildcat and the African wildcat. Wild cat and domestic cat do hold similarities, however, the wild cat is larger in size and resembles a lynx.
The Asiatic wild cat is spotted, the African wild cat is faintly striped, has short sandy-gray fur, banded legs, red-backed ears ad a tapering tail. African wild cat is considerably smaller than the European subspecies. The African wild cat is believed to be the ancestor of the domestic cat, since it is tamer than the European wild cats and active at night.
The European wild cat is striped has long fur and a bushy tail with a rounded tip and is larger than a domestic cat. It has longer legs, a larger and flatter head.
A wild cat’s body is muscular, robust, stylized and flexible. Wild cats range in weight from an average of 2.7 to 4 kg in females to an average of 4 to 5 kg in males although the weight of individual cats varies substantially throughout the year.
Wildcats are solitary and peaceful animals; however, they will act aggressively when threatened or when hunting. This cat species is territorial and will not hesitate when it comes to defending their territory.
Wild cats have five toes on each of their forepaws, but only four toes on each back paw. Cats have claws that can be drawn back into sheaths when not in use, thus keeping them quite sharp. Cat teeth are highly specialized for eating meat.
