Sumatran serow

The serow is an antelope like ungulate. It has short horns, cloven hooves, a thick grey-black coat, and a goat-like appearance.

The Sumatran serow (Capricornis sumatrensis) consisting of 11 subspecies is the largest Capricornis species. The mainland serows are found in the forest mountain areas of Malaya, Sumatra, Thailand, Burma and South China.

Although they are taxonomically closely related to Japanese and Formosan serows they are large as a calf in body size when compared with Japanese serows.

Sumatran serow of Malaysia and Sumatran are the most endangered sub-species. The serow is hunted for meat and its body parts, which are used in local medicine.
