Orcinus orca: Killer whale species

The killer whale, Orcinus orca is second only to humans as the most widely distributed mammal on earth.

It ranges from the tropical seas through the temperate zones to the edge of the pack ice at both poles. Perhaps one of the most diversified species and the most recognizable of all the dolphins, killer whales are a dynamic species that, despite copious research is yet to be fully discovered.

An adult make killer whale usually measures from 22 to 27 feet (7 to8 meters) long and weighs from 8,000 to 12,000 pounds.

Killer whales are black with white eye-patches white belly patterns and a variable white ‘saddle patch’ located just behind the dorsal.

Although it is easy to see the killer whales in the clear water at a marine park, their coloring help to hide them as they hunt for food in the ocean.

Killer whales have taken in some parts of the world for their meat and oil, usually as a bycatch of whaling operations focused on other species.
