Zebras

Zebra looks a lot like a horse. The scientific name for this group is Equus. Zebras are classified in the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class Mammalia, and order Perissodactyla, family Equidae, genus Equus.

Zebras live in herds, Male zebras are stallions. Grown zebras weigh 500 to 900 pounds. Zebras are 4 to 5 feet tall at the shoulder.

Like horses, zebras have long heads and necks. All zebras have stripes on their body. The stripes offer the zebra camouflage.

Most zebras like companionship, so they commonly live in groups called bands. These bands of zebras are led by a stallion.

Zebras are as wild as the winds that rush across Africa’s plains. Still, zebras share bloodlines with one of the world’s beloved domesticated animals, the horse.

There are three types of zebras:
*Plains – Equus quagga
*Grevy’s – Equus grevyi
*Mountain – Equus zebra

Zebras are territorial and defend their identified space violently. They are efficient grazers and will occasionally browse.
